On an ethic of not going there

چکیده

Fieldwork – “going there” is the presumed norm and baseline of geographical research. In this commentary, I propose a framework for challenging normative framing fieldwork in geography other fields (including those beyond academia): an ethic not going there. argue that fieldwork, rather than neutral rite passage, deeply entwined with some most entrenched issues contemporary research more broadly. Building on range prior critiques using lens “access”, ways critiquing presumptions inherent imaginaries “fieldwork”. This ethical argues doing should have to be justified same extent as expected justified. envision (always) there alternative way thinking about (and researchers) within geography.
